The oldest luxury brand in Kenya is 111 years old!
The concept of the modern Kenyan luxury as we know it with its luxuriously furnished safari tours and luxury hotel accommodation began at the turn of the 20th century when European explorers and colonists began trickling into the territory of what is now Kenya. By the 1910s, there was a flood of immigrants from Europe coming into Africa to seek new opportunities and adventures. Many of these were adventurous, European aristocrats, businessmen, government officials and even the Jews escaping religious persecution in Europe.
As more immigrants flooded into Kenya from all over the world and even other parts of Africa in the first few decades of the 20th century, the concept of the modern luxury began to take shape. Many of the visitors were upper class Europeans and even Gilded Age Americans and they began to demand the same luxurious living that they were used to back home. It is at this time that the concept of the luxury African safari in Kenya began to acquire form and it has remained largely the same for the past century with the same model and still catering to a top end travel market.
One company that can claim the credit for being the first ever luxury safari company in Kenya is Tarlton & Co. The company is the one that invented the unique concept of the luxury safari tent which was then virtually nonexistent. It was founded in 1904 and has been known for its unique and understated luxury style over the past century. Its style has been very similar to that of its contemporaries which were founded around the same time, and many of which are now top-end global luxury brands.
The pioneer of the luxury safari in the world has retained its Kenyan roots for the past 100 years and still has an exclusive Kenyan presence. Apart from its luxury safari franchise, the company also sells luxury hand-crafted furniture collections many of which are manufactured using salvaged mahogany and leather. If you have gone to some of the leading Kenya luxury lodges, camps and resorts such as the Ol Donyo Lodge, you will find the Newland, Tarlton and & Co luxury furniture collection there-they are unique, classic and beautifully crafted as you would expect of a 100 year old Kenyan luxury brand.
Apart from its furniture collections, the Kenyan luxury brand also sells beautifully crafted luxury luggage, safari clothes and fashion accessories.

The relationship between Africa and Diamonds is not one of luxury and glamour. It is often a tragic one. In fact, that relationship between Africa’s most precious metal and its people can best be summarized by two words: Blood Diamond. Yet the continent has produced some of the largest, most beautiful and most iconic diamonds in history. It is always said that some diamond pieces have a character and a life of their own, along with a name too! Here are 10 of the largest diamonds to have emerged out of Africa:-
The Millennium Star Diamond
The Millennium Star Diamond is generally known as the second largest Grade D colorless diamond. It is an impressive 203.4 carat gem that is both externally and internally flawless. The diamond is pear shaped and is owned by the South African firm De Beers. The diamond piece was discovered in the DR Congo district of Mbuji Mayi in 1990.It was first displayed in 1999 as the centerpiece of the De Beers diamond collection.
The Red Cross Diamond
The Red Cross was discovered in the iconic South African mine of Kimberley in 1901 and in 1918, it was presented as a gift to the British Red Cross during a sale that was held at the Christies. It is a canary yellow and 205.7 carat diamond. At the top facet of the diamond is a visible Maltese Cross from which it derives its name.
The De Beers Diamond
Discovered in the Kimberley mines in 1888, the 234.65 carat De Beers Diamond was the largest diamond that was found in the South African mines during that time period. It was most likely cut in Amsterdam. It is the eighth largest faceted diamond in the world and Cartier set it on a ceremonial necklace that was designed in 1928. This necklace, called the Patiala Necklace was made for an eccentric Indian Maharaja called Bhupinder Singh, the Maharaja of Patiala who also had a special love for the luxury Rolls Royce cars.
The Jubilee Diamond
The original stone from which this diamond was cut weighed some whopping 650.80 carats and it was found in 1895 at the Jagersfontein Mine in South Africa. The diamond piece is an irregular octahedron and has no definite shape or even faces. It was turned into a 245.35 carat diamond piece of exceptional purity as well as size. Originally, it was called the Rietz Diamond. It is a colorless cushion-shaped diamond piece and was renamed to honor the Queen on her Jubilee anniversary of coronation. It has a rating of E-Grade colorless diamond and its actual value is unknown.
The Centenary Diamond
This is third largest diamond piece to have come from the Premier Mine in South Africa. It is a 273.85 carat gem which was discovered on 17 July, 1986. In fact, a lot of the people who go on the luxury safaris are not millionaires but average middle class folks who save their money over time for the ultimate experience of a lifetime, research and weigh their options before embarking on a Kenyan luxury safari. The situation is made even better by the fact that a lot of the luxury travel destinations try to relieve the burden of enjoying a beautiful and luxurious safari but offering travelers lot of packages for maximum enjoyment. Yet there are plenty of ways that you can use in order to save money when you are embarking on a luxury safari.
In order to score the best deals when it comes to the typically expensive luxury African safaris, the most important step is to get a great luxury safari specialist. This will not only guarantee you the best experiences which allow you to optimize on your safari but it also guarantees you some great cost savings. The top safari specialists in Kenya are generally privy to some of the hidden luxury safari special offers which are available in the market. They network at both a business and personal level with some of the leading luxury safari product sellers in the market and as a result, they get the first-hand information when a particular safari provider is planning to roll out some nice deals. The Kenyan luxury safari industry, to some extent, is an old boys’ network where people generally know each other.
It is generally said that the true luxury safari will let you get the essence of the safari and Africa. It is a very personal and transformation experience and in many cases, it has gotten many people hooked to the Kenya safari and they keep in coming again and again which can be financially risky if you do not have your savings in order as a typical all-package luxury safari can cost anywhere from $5000 to $10,000 depending on the number of nights and the experiences that you choose to enjoy.
The best luxury safaris are those ones which are 100% tailor-made in order to optimize on your experiences. And here is why having an old hand managing your safari will be critical. Most likely they know about every nook and cranny in Kenya including the finest safari lodges, resorts, hotels, camping facilities, activities, tour packages and much more. That implies that whenever you need a good safari, they can always find the best packages that will suit and your travel companions and they can always save you money and time while ensuring that your safari will be really spot on. Here are additional money saving tips that you can incorporate for your next luxury safari to Kenya:-
Go to Safari During the Secret Seasons
The “secret season” is really the low season for the luxury safaris. This is the time when the prices will plunge and you can make some significant savings on your safaris. These are the times that people generally do not associate with going on a safari in Kenya. For example, for the finest weather and game viewing in Kenya, you can travel from December through to March. However, not many people consider going to safari in Kenya during these months. They would prefer the season from July to October. If you travel during these hidden seasons, you can look forward to not just highly discounted safaris but also some of the best kind of luxury safaris that you can have.
Look for Newer Safari Camps and Lodges
Although the older lodges and camps with a history and tradition will offer you the finest luxury safari experiences, do not discount the newer luxury safari camps and lodges, particularly if they are run by a renowned travel brand. The newer safari options will want to attract to more repeat clients and as a result, they will offer lower rates than the going rates in the market. Experienced Kenya luxury safari specialists will have a good knowledge of some of the newest properties in the market with all those incredible offers that you can take advantage of. A good luxury safari specialist in Kenya will also tell you whether accommodation at a particular property or a particular package is really worth spending your money on. When you get it right when it comes to these new properties, the luxury experience is always truly marvelous.
Save with a Mobile Luxury Safari in Kenya
Mobile luxury safaris in Kenya are some of the most popular options for those who are looking for extra savings or those who want to experience extreme travel adventures.
