Tanzanian aviation has been on the doldrums ever since the collapse of the East African Airlines more than four decades ago but the country seems intent on rebuilding its aviation industry.
The airline has gone through several ups and downs with several partnerships and privatizations that didn’t work out. By 2015, it was an airline without a plane after its sole aircraft, the Bombardier Q300 was sent to South Africa for some heavy maintenance work.
However, the past three years have spelt good tidings for the Tanzanian flag carrier. It acquired three turbo prop planes following a commitment by the new Tanzanian President Pombe Magufuli to revive the carrier. Three Bombardier Q400 planes were acquired in 2016 and leased to the airline and a Dash 8-400 was acquired in early 2018.
The latest acquisition is the Boeing 787 Dreamliner that has just arrived in Dar es Salaam and which will service international routes.
The Dreamliner is the fourth of the 7 aircraft that have been purchased by the Tanzanian government and are to be leased to Air Tanzania. It will serve the Mumbai, Bangkok and Guangzhou routes from September this year.
The turbo prop planes mainly serve the domestic Tanzanian routes such as Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, Mbeya, Bukoba, Arusha, Tabora, Mtwara, Ruvuma and Zanzibar. Tanzania is a huge country with a great potential for aviation.
The airline will be acquiring another B787-8 Dreamliner by 2020 to boost its operation and its expansion plans.

Kenya’s fastest growing low cost carrier (LCC) Silverstone Air Services has launched flights between Nairobi and Maasai Mara to cater for the tourist market.
Silverstone will be launching the scheduled flights from Wilson Airport to Maasai Mara on July 10, 2018. The 45 minute flight will be departing Nairobi at 11.00 a.m. and departing Maasai Mara at 12.15pm.
A return ticket on the flight will cost Ksh.29,500.
The launch of the Silverstone flights will increase competition on the route which is already served by Safarilink and Fly-Sax along with several other chartered carriers.
Silverstone says the daily return flight will also be targeting other airstrips in the region including Mara North, Serena and Keekorok and is aimed at the leisure travelers on the northern tourist circuit.
Silverstone has been on an aggressive expansion drive over the past year with the launch of its flights from Nairobi to Kisumu, Lamu, Ukunda and Malindi. Early this year, Silverstone made history by becoming the first airline to launch direct Kisumu to Mombasa flights.
Its busiest and most lucrative route is currently the Nairobi-Kisumu one where the airline makes 17 trips per week. Passengers travelling on the Mombasa to Kisumu route are now served with three weekly flights.
Reports coming in are that Air France is set to increase the frequency of its Nairobi flights in 2019. The airline will now fly to Nairobi five times a week, increasing the number of connections between Nairobi and Paris. Currently, the airline services the route three times a week.
From March 31, 2019, Air France will operate daily flights on the route between Tuesdays and Saturdays. The airline will service the route with a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner offering 30 seats in the Business Class, 21 seats in the Premium Economy and 225 seats in economy.

Flight AF814 will depart Paris at 2050 and arrive in Nairobi at 0600 the following day.
